Tractor (band)

Tractor were a British rock band, originally formed in Rochdale, England in 1971. Initially known as The Way We Live, they consisted of guitarist/vocalist Steve Clayton and drummer Tony Crabtree. Their music is often described as progressive rock or space rock, characterized by extended instrumental passages, psychedelic influences, and a raw, often lo-fi sound.

Tractor gained attention through their association with John Peel, who championed their music on his BBC radio shows. They recorded several sessions for Peel's show, further increasing their exposure. Their debut album, A Candle for Judith, was released in 1971 on Dandelion Records, a label founded by Peel. The album is considered a cult classic and showcases their distinctive sound.

Following the demise of Dandelion Records, Tractor continued to record and perform, though they never achieved mainstream success. They self-released several albums and singles throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Despite their lack of commercial breakthrough, Tractor maintained a dedicated following, particularly among fans of underground and independent music.

The band's later work saw them experiment with different musical styles, incorporating elements of punk and new wave into their sound. Tractor officially disbanded in the 1980s, but their music has continued to be reissued and discovered by new generations of listeners. Their legacy lies in their unique blend of progressive rock, psychedelic exploration, and DIY ethos.
