András Kovács (film director)

András Kovács (1925 – 2017) was a Hungarian film director and screenwriter. He was a prominent figure in Hungarian cinema, known for his socially conscious and often politically charged films.

Kovács's work frequently explored themes of Hungarian history, societal problems, and the individual's struggle within a larger political context. He often employed a documentary-like realism in his filmmaking style.

Some of his notable films include Cold Days (1966), which addressed the role of Hungarians in wartime atrocities; Walls (1968), examining the psychological impact of political repression; and The Red Countess (1985), a historical drama about Countess Mihály Károlyi.

Kovács received numerous awards and accolades for his work throughout his career. He was an influential figure in shaping the landscape of Hungarian cinema and is remembered for his commitment to using film as a tool for social commentary and historical reflection. He also served as a professor at the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest.
