Oto, Iowa

Oto is a city in Woodbury County, Iowa, United States. The population was 108 at the 2020 census.

Geography

Oto is located at approximately 42°17′25″N 95°51′56″W (42.290278, -95.865556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.17 square miles (0.44 km2), all of it land. The town sits along the Little Sioux River valley.

History

Oto was initially called "Grant Center" and was a candidate for the county seat of Woodbury County. The town later changed its name to Oto, named after Chief Otto of the Ioway tribe. The town was officially incorporated in 1882. The town's historical development was largely influenced by agriculture and its location along transportation routes.

Demographics

2020 census

As of the census of 2020, there were 108 people, 53 households, and 31 families residing in the city. The population density was 635.3 inhabitants per square mile (245.3/km2). There were 61 housing units at an average density of 358.8 per square mile (138.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.

There were 53 households, of which 20.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% were non-families. 35.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 22.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.04 and the average family size was 2.58.

The median age in the city was 47.5 years. 16.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.3% were from 25 to 44; 28.7% were from 45 to 64; and 27.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.9% male and 49.1% female.

Economy

The economy of Oto is primarily based on agriculture. Small businesses also operate within the city.

Oto is served by the Maple Valley–Anthon Oto Community School District.
