Banawali
Banawali is an archaeological site located in the Fatehabad district of Haryana, India. It is considered an important Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) site, dating back to the pre-Harappan, Harappan, and post-Harappan periods. Excavations at Banawali have revealed a well-planned city with a fortified citadel and a lower town, indicating a sophisticated urban layout similar to other major IVC sites like Harappa and Mohenjo-daro.
Key findings at Banawali include evidence of distinct phases of settlement, terracotta figurines, seals, weights and measures, pottery, and beads. A notable discovery is the unique "barley grain" found at the site, suggesting agricultural practices of the time. The absence of a proper drainage system, unlike many other Harappan cities, is a distinctive characteristic of Banawali. The site offers valuable insights into the evolution and decline of the Indus Valley Civilization in the Ghaggar-Hakra river valley region.
