George Brooks (musician)
George Brooks is an American saxophonist and composer known for his work blending jazz with Hindustani classical music. He primarily plays tenor and soprano saxophones.
Brooks studied saxophone and composition at the New England Conservatory of Music. He began his career playing straight-ahead jazz before becoming interested in exploring Indian music. This interest led him to study with master musicians in India, including Ali Akbar Khan, a renowned sarod player.
Brooks has collaborated with numerous Indian musicians, including Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia, and Ustad Sultan Khan. He formed the band Summit with Hussain, which toured extensively and released several albums. Brooks also leads his own ensembles, which often feature both jazz and Indian musicians. His compositions often draw on elements of both musical traditions, creating a unique and innovative sound.
Brooks has received critical acclaim for his work and is considered a pioneer in the fusion of jazz and Hindustani classical music. He has released several albums under his own name and as a collaborator.
