Krasin (1976 icebreaker)

The Krasin is a Russian (formerly Soviet) icebreaker, completed in 1976. It is one of the world's largest and most powerful diesel-electric icebreakers. The ship's primary role is to clear shipping lanes in the Arctic, specifically along the Northern Sea Route.

Built in Finland by Wärtsilä at the Helsinki shipyard, the Krasin is a sister ship to the icebreakers Kapitan Sorokin and Kapitan Nikolayev. It is named after Leonid Krasin, an early Soviet politician and diplomat.

The Krasin is equipped to navigate through thick ice and provide support to ships transiting the Arctic waters. The vessel incorporates features designed for heavy icebreaking operations, including a reinforced hull and powerful propulsion system.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Krasin came under the ownership of the Russian government and continues to operate under the management of Rosmorport. It remains a significant asset for Russia's Arctic ambitions, facilitating trade and resource extraction in the region.
