Rogue River (Oregon)

The Rogue River is a 215-mile (346 km) river in southwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains an area of approximately 5,080 square miles (13,160 km2) on the western slopes of the Cascade Range and the eastern slopes of the Klamath Mountains. Known for its rugged scenery, whitewater rapids, and salmon runs, the Rogue River has been designated a National Wild and Scenic River.

The river's source is near Crater Lake National Park, from where it flows generally westward through the Cascade and Klamath Mountains before emptying into the Pacific Ocean near Gold Beach. Major tributaries include the Applegate River, Illinois River, and Galice Creek.

The Rogue River has played a significant role in the history and culture of the region. Native American tribes, including the Takelma, lived along the river for centuries, relying on its salmon and other resources. During the mid-19th century, the Rogue River War occurred between Native Americans and American settlers.

Today, the Rogue River is a popular destination for recreational activities such as rafting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and camping. The river supports a diverse ecosystem, including various species of fish, birds, and mammals. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the Rogue River and its surrounding watershed from pollution and habitat loss.
