The Report (2019 film)
The Report is a 2019 American political thriller film written and directed by Scott Z. Burns. The film stars Adam Driver, Annette Bening, Ted Levine, Michael C. Hall, Tim Blake Nelson, Corey Stoll, Maura Tierney, and Jon Hamm.
The film is based on the true story of Daniel J. Jones, a Senate staffer who was assigned by Senator Dianne Feinstein to lead an investigation into the CIA's Detention and Interrogation Program after the September 11 attacks. The investigation, which lasted several years, uncovered the CIA's use of torture and other inhumane treatment of detainees, as well as the agency's attempts to cover up its actions.
The film depicts Jones's relentless pursuit of the truth, the obstacles he faced from the CIA and the White House, and the eventual release of a heavily redacted version of the Senate Intelligence Committee report on the CIA's torture program. The Report explores themes of government transparency, accountability, and the moral implications of the war on terror. It received generally positive reviews, with critics praising Driver's performance and Burns's direction and screenplay. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2019, and was released in theaters on November 15, 2019, by Amazon Studios.
