Carlton (UK Parliament constituency)

Carlton was a county constituency in Nottinghamshire, England, which returned Members of Parliament to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was created for the 1885 general election, and abolished for the 1918 general election.

Boundaries:

The constituency comprised the eastern part of the Broxtowe wapentake, containing the parishes of Carlton, Gedling, Stoke Bardolph, Burton Joyce, Bulcote, Lowdham, Caythorpe, Gunthorpe, East Bridgford, Kneeton, Newton, Bingham, Saxondale, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Holme Pierrepont, Gamston, and Edwalton. Its boundaries largely reflected the rural areas surrounding the expanding urban center of Nottingham.

Members of Parliament:

  • 1885: John Evelyn Denison, Conservative
  • 1887: William Hodgson Barrow, Conservative
  • 1892: Henry Strutt, Liberal Unionist
  • 1895: John Leake, Conservative
  • 1906: Henry James Tennant, Liberal

Elections:

Elections in Carlton often saw contests between Conservative and Liberal candidates, with the Conservative party generally holding a strong position, particularly in the later years of the constituency's existence. The 1892 election saw a Liberal Unionist take the seat, reflecting the complexities of party allegiances during that period. The 1906 election, however, saw a Liberal victory as part of the broader Liberal landslide that year.

Abolition:

The Representation of the People Act 1918 brought about significant changes to constituency boundaries. Carlton was abolished, and its area was largely incorporated into the new Broxtowe constituency.
