HMS Gannet (1927)

HMS Gannet was a shore establishment of the Royal Navy located at Londonderry, Northern Ireland, commissioned in 1927. It primarily served as a training base for anti-submarine warfare during the Second World War, responsible for training personnel in the operation and maintenance of ASDIC (sonar) equipment and related tactics. Its primary role was preparing Royal Navy and Allied sailors for the Battle of the Atlantic. Post-war, Gannet continued as a training establishment, although its focus shifted with evolving naval technology. The establishment was eventually decommissioned, and the site was redeveloped for other purposes. It played a significant role in the Allied war effort by contributing trained personnel to combat the U-boat threat. The name Gannet was also applied to other Royal Navy establishments at different times.
