William Falconer (translator)
William Falconer (1744-1824) was a Scottish classical scholar and translator, best known for his English translation of Strabo's Geography, published in 1796. He was the nephew of William Falconer (1732-1769), the poet and author of The Shipwreck.
Falconer was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He became a physician and practiced medicine in Chester, England. He dedicated much of his time, however, to scholarly pursuits, particularly the study of ancient Greek geography and history.
His translation of Strabo's Geography was a monumental undertaking, providing English readers with access to a comprehensive survey of the ancient world's geographical knowledge. Falconer's translation was praised for its accuracy and clarity, and it remained the standard English translation of Strabo for many years. The work also included extensive notes and commentary, further enhancing its value to scholars. He collaborated with Thomas Falconer (believed to be his brother) on the geological notes.
In addition to his translation of Strabo, Falconer also published other works, including Remarks on some parts of the ancient Geography (1803). His work contributed significantly to the understanding of ancient geography in the English-speaking world.
