Charles King (professor of international affairs)

Charles King is an American academic and professor of international affairs and government at Georgetown University. He is known for his expertise in nationalism, ethnic conflict, post-communism, and the political development of the Black Sea region.

King received his Ph.D. from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. Prior to joining Georgetown, he taught at Princeton University. He has held fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the Fulbright Program, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

King's research and writing focus on the intersection of history, politics, and identity, particularly in the context of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He has authored several books, including The Ghost of Freedom: A History of the Caucasus (2008), Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams (2011), Midnight at the Pera Palace: The Birth of Modern Istanbul (2014), and Gods of the Upper Air: How a Circle of Renegade Anthropologists Reinvented Race, Sex, and Gender in the Twentieth Century (2019). He has also written extensively for academic journals and popular media outlets.

King has served in various advisory roles for governmental and non-governmental organizations, providing expert analysis on issues related to conflict resolution, democratization, and regional security. He frequently comments on current events related to Eastern Europe, Russia, and the Black Sea region.
