Fumiko Hayashi (politician)
Fumiko Hayashi (林 文子, Hayashi Fumiko, born May 5, 1946) is a Japanese politician and businesswoman. She served as the Mayor of Yokohama, Japan's largest city by population, from 2009 to 2021.
Prior to entering politics, Hayashi had a distinguished career in the corporate world. She held leadership positions in several prominent companies, including BMW Tokyo, president of Tokyo General Motors, and chairman and CEO of Daiei. Her business background was often highlighted during her political career.
As Mayor of Yokohama, Hayashi focused on urban development, economic growth, and social welfare. Her administration oversaw significant infrastructure projects and promoted Yokohama as a business and tourism destination. Key initiatives included attracting foreign investment, improving public transportation, and addressing the needs of the city's aging population.
Hayashi was initially elected as an independent candidate but received support from various political parties during her tenure. Her political positions were generally considered centrist. She chose not to seek a fourth term in the 2021 mayoral election.
