Limnoreia (mythology)

Limnoreia (Λιμνώρεια) is a Nereid in Greek mythology, one of the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris. She is typically considered a sea nymph, associated with the ocean and its various aspects.

Her name, which derives from the Greek words "limne" (λίμνη) meaning lake or marsh and "reos" (ῥέω) meaning to flow, suggests a connection to coastal waters, marshlands, or the flow of water in general, as opposed to the open sea, though as a Nereid she remains primarily a sea deity. Some interpretations also suggest a connection to harbors or bays.

Like her sisters, Limnoreia possessed the gift of prophecy and was known for her helpful nature towards sailors and those who travelled the sea. The Nereids as a collective were considered protectors, aiding those in need and ensuring safe passage.

While Limnoreia does not play a central role in any major mythological narratives, she is mentioned in lists of Nereids compiled by various ancient authors, including Homer in the Iliad and Hesiod in the Theogony.
