Washington Square (Savannah, Georgia)

Washington Square is one of the 22 original squares in Savannah, Georgia, part of the city's famed historic district and urban plan. It is located in the southeastern quadrant of the city, bordered by East Saint Julian Street to the north, Drayton Street to the west, East Congress Street to the south, and Abercorn Street to the east.

Established in 1790 and named for President George Washington, Washington Square served initially as a gathering place and training ground for the Georgia Hussars, a local militia unit. Later, it served as the location of the city's water tower.

Historically, Washington Square's significance extends beyond its aesthetic appeal and communal purpose. It is situated in the heart of the historic ward known as "The Old Fort," named for Fort Wayne, an early defensive structure located nearby. While Fort Wayne itself is no longer extant, Washington Square is considered to be in close proximity to its likely former location.

Like many of Savannah's squares, Washington Square is characterized by its mature trees, manicured landscaping, and central walkways. It offers a peaceful respite within the bustling city and serves as a popular location for locals and tourists alike. While the square itself doesn't feature a monument to George Washington, its name serves as a perpetual reminder of his importance in American history.
