Hard Luck (1921 film)

Hard Luck is a two-reel silent comedy film written, directed by, and starring Buster Keaton. It was released on December 4, 1921.

The film follows Keaton as he tries to earn money to pay off his debts. His various attempts to secure employment, including a stint as a detective hired to capture a dangerous criminal, are met with comedic misfortune. The film is noted for its physical humor and elaborate gag sequences, characteristic of Keaton's style. A significant portion of the film takes place at a country club, where Keaton's character attempts (and fails) to work as a gardener, waiter, and general laborer. One of the film's most memorable and outlandish gags involves Keaton accidentally falling into a well and emerging covered in tar and feathers, leading to him being mistaken for a mythical beast. The film ends with a surreal and darkly comedic twist.
