New City Hall (Prague)
The New City Hall (Czech: Nová radnice) of Prague is a complex of buildings located on Mariánské náměstí (Mariánské Square) in the Old Town district of Prague. It serves as the seat of the Prague City Council (Magistrát hlavního města Prahy) and the office of the Mayor of Prague.
The New City Hall is not a single, monolithic structure, but rather a grouping of interconnected buildings constructed and adapted over different periods. The core of the complex includes parts of the former Baroque-era Clam-Gallas Palace, which was acquired by the city in the early 20th century. Later additions, including a purpose-built administrative building, were constructed to expand the available space to accommodate the growing needs of the city administration.
While often referred to as "New City Hall," it's important to note that Prague's Old Town Hall, located on Old Town Square, also exists and retains historical significance. The New City Hall mainly houses the administrative functions of the city government.
The complex is characterized by a mix of architectural styles reflecting the periods of its construction. The original Baroque features of the Clam-Gallas Palace contrast with the later additions, creating a layered architectural landscape. The building complex is an important center for the administration and governance of the city of Prague.
