Hermann (crater)
Hermann is a crater located on the far side of the Moon. It lies within the immense Mare Orientale impact basin, specifically in the Montes Rook ring, which circles the inner Mare Orientale region, the Lacus Veris.
The crater is roughly circular in shape, with a well-defined rim. Its interior floor is relatively level and appears to be devoid of a central peak. Nearby craters of note include Maunder to the southwest, and Kopff to the northeast, both also within the Montes Rook.
The area surrounding Hermann is characterized by the rugged, mountainous terrain of the Montes Rook, a concentric ring of mountains formed by the massive impact that created Mare Orientale. The age of Hermann is estimated to be within the Imbrian period, formed after the impact that created Mare Orientale.
The crater is named after the German mathematician Jakob Hermann.
