Billa (supermarket)
Billa is an Austrian supermarket chain headquartered in Wiener Neudorf, Lower Austria. Founded in 1953 by Karl Wlaschek, it has grown to become one of Austria's largest supermarket operators. The name "Billa" is derived from the first syllable of "billig" (German for "cheap") and "Laden" (German for "shop").
Billa offers a wide range of grocery products, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, baked goods, and packaged foods. The chain also typically carries household goods, personal care items, and often features a selection of regional Austrian specialties. Billa stores are generally located in urban areas and cater to daily shopping needs.
Over time, Billa has expanded beyond Austria, establishing a presence in several Central and Eastern European countries. Ownership of Billa has changed hands a few times. It was part of the REWE Group from 1996 until 2021. In 2021, REWE sold the Billa chain in Austria to SPAR Austria. The Billa brand continues to operate under SPAR ownership.
