Vespolate

Vespolate is a red Italian grape variety primarily grown in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. It is most famously used in the production of the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wines of Colline Novaresi and Ghemme, where it is typically blended with Nebbiolo (locally known as Spanna). In these blends, Vespolate is often added to soften the sometimes austere tannins of Nebbiolo and contribute aromatic complexity.

The Vespolate grape is known for its distinctive spicy and floral aromas, often described as having notes of black pepper, cinnamon, and rose petals. It typically produces wines with bright acidity, moderate tannins (though generally less robust than Nebbiolo), and a characteristic earthy undertone. Vespolate wines are generally considered to have good aging potential.

The variety has experienced fluctuating popularity over time. In the past, it was more widely planted throughout Piedmont. However, due to phylloxera and a shift towards more internationally recognized varieties, its acreage has decreased. Efforts are underway to preserve and promote the Vespolate grape and its unique characteristics.
