Karan (caste)
The Karan caste is a community primarily found in the state of Odisha, India. Historically, they were associated with scribal and administrative occupations. They traditionally held positions as writers, accountants, and record keepers in the royal courts and village administrations.
The origins of the Karan caste are debated. Some theories suggest they originated from a mixed-caste background, possibly involving unions between Brahmin and Kshatriya or Vaishya communities. Other theories propose a more distinct and separate origin.
Socially and economically, the Karan community has historically enjoyed a relatively privileged position in Odia society due to their traditional occupations and access to education. They have played a significant role in the cultural and political landscape of Odisha.
Within the Karan community, there exist various sub-groups (gotras or clans), each with its own customs and traditions. Marriage within the same gotra is generally avoided.
In contemporary India, members of the Karan community are found in diverse professions, including government service, education, business, and technology. Like other communities in India, they are subject to the country's reservation policies aimed at addressing historical inequalities.
