USS McDougal (DD-54)
USS McDougal (DD-54) was a United States Navy O'Brien-class destroyer launched in 1914 and serving during World War I.
McDougal was named for Rear Admiral David Stockton McDougal. She was launched on August 22, 1914, by Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts; sponsored by Miss A. McDougal; and commissioned on May 15, 1915, Lieutenant Commander A. P. Niblack in command.
During World War I, McDougal operated with the U.S. Naval Forces patrolling the Atlantic. She escorted convoys and conducted anti-submarine patrols. She was involved in several reported submarine contacts, but no confirmed sinkings.
After the war, McDougal remained in service for a short period. She was decommissioned on June 30, 1922. She was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on March 8, 1935, and sold for scrap on June 28, 1935, in accordance with the London Naval Treaty.
The McDougal's service history, typical of many destroyers of her era, reflects the Navy's crucial role in protecting shipping lanes during World War I and the subsequent reduction in naval forces after the armistice.
