Tom Tierney (rugby union)
Tom Tierney (born 24 June 1977, Limerick, Ireland; died 24 February 2023) was an Irish rugby union player and coach.
Tierney played primarily at scrum-half. He represented Munster, Connacht, and Leicester Tigers during his playing career. He won eight caps for Ireland between 1999 and 2002, including appearances at the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
Following his retirement from playing, Tierney moved into coaching. He served as the head coach of the Ireland Women's national rugby union team from 2014 until 2018. During his tenure, Ireland won the 2015 Women's Six Nations Championship. He also held coaching roles with Garryowen FC and the Ireland U20s.
Tierney was highly regarded in Irish rugby for his contributions as both a player and coach. His sudden death in 2023 was met with widespread shock and sadness within the rugby community.
