UniDIMM

UniDIMM is a type of memory module designed by Intel to support both DDR3 and DDR4 SDRAM on the same physical module. This allows a single memory slot to potentially accept either DDR3 or DDR4, depending on the CPU and chipset in use. The key feature of UniDIMM is its ability to switch between the electrical signaling and pinout configurations required by each memory type. However, a motherboard using a UniDIMM slot will only support either DDR3 or DDR4, but not both simultaneously. The detection of which memory type to utilize is generally handled by the system BIOS or firmware. UniDIMM offered a transitional solution during the early adoption phase of DDR4, allowing manufacturers to create platforms with increased flexibility. The technology did not achieve widespread adoption, as the industry largely shifted towards dedicated DDR4 slots. UniDIMM modules are generally identifiable by their unique keying and pin arrangement compared to standard DDR3 or DDR4 DIMMs.
