Lebedyn
Lebedyn (Ukrainian: Лебедин) is a city located in Sumy Oblast, in the northeastern part of Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Lebedyn Raion, though the city itself is of oblast significance and not part of the raion.
History:
Lebedyn was founded in 1654 as a fortress city on the border of the Russian state. Its purpose was to protect the territory from Tatar raids. The name "Lebedyn" is believed to be derived from the Ukrainian word for swan ("lebid"), suggesting a possible abundance of swans in the area during its founding.
Throughout its history, Lebedyn has been an important regional center. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as a significant trading post and a center for agriculture.
