The Church (band)
The Church are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1980. Initially associated with the new wave movement, their music later encompassed elements of psychedelic rock, dream pop, and alternative rock, establishing a distinctive and enduring sound.
History:
The band's initial lineup consisted of Steve Kilbey (lead vocals, bass guitar), Peter Koppes (guitar, keyboards), Marty Willson-Piper (guitar, bass guitar), and Nick Ward (drums). Ward was replaced by Richard Ploog in 1981. This lineup is considered the classic and most commercially successful iteration of the band.
The Church gained early attention in Australia with singles like "The Unguarded Moment" and their debut album Of Skins and Heart (1981). However, it was their international breakthrough with the album Heyday (1985) and the single "Almost With You" that solidified their broader appeal.
Their most successful single, "Under the Milky Way," appeared on the album Starfish (1988). The song achieved significant chart success in both Australia and the United States and remains their signature song.
Following Starfish, internal tensions and creative differences led to changes in the lineup. Richard Ploog left the band, and Jay Dee Daugherty replaced him on drums for a period.
Through the 1990s and 2000s, The Church continued to release albums, exploring more experimental and psychedelic sounds. The lineup shifted again, with Tim Powles joining on drums and, at various points, different members leaving and returning.
Marty Willson-Piper left the band in 2013. The band has continued to tour and record with various lineup configurations since.
Musical Style and Influences:
The Church's music is characterized by its jangly guitar textures, atmospheric soundscapes, Steve Kilbey's distinctive vocals and lyrical content, and a blend of psychedelic and melodic sensibilities. They have been influenced by bands like The Byrds, The Beatles, and Pink Floyd, while also forging their own unique sonic identity. Their songs often explore themes of spirituality, mythology, and introspection.
