Rattlesnake Island (Queensland)
Rattlesnake Island is a small, uninhabited island located in Halifax Bay, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Situated approximately 18 kilometers (11 miles) northeast of Lucinda, it forms part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
The island is composed primarily of sand and coral rubble, with sparse vegetation. Its low-lying profile makes it susceptible to erosion and inundation during cyclones and storm surges.
Rattlesnake Island serves as an important nesting site for various seabird species, including terns and noddies. Its surrounding waters support diverse marine life, contributing to the overall biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem.
Due to its protected status within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, access to Rattlesnake Island is restricted, typically requiring permits for scientific research or monitoring activities. Public access is generally discouraged to minimize disturbance to nesting birds and the fragile island environment.
