Gundala (film)
Gundala is a 2019 Indonesian superhero film written and directed by Joko Anwar. It is based on the Indonesian comic book character Gundala, created by Harya Suraminata (Hasmi). The film is the first installment in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe (BCU).
The story follows Sancaka, a man who has lived a hard life on the streets since childhood. He suppresses his innate ability to harness lightning for the sake of survival. However, as Jakarta descends into chaos and injustice rises, Sancaka must decide whether to continue living in the shadows or embrace his destiny as Gundala, a symbol of hope and justice for the oppressed.
The film stars Abimana Aryasatya as Sancaka/Gundala, alongside Tara Basro, Bront Palarae, Ario Bayu, Cecep Arif Rahman, Muzakki Ramdhan, and Marissa Anita. Gundala was released theatrically in Indonesia on August 29, 2019, and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its action sequences, visual effects, and social commentary. It was also a commercial success.
