Taugevatn

Taugevatn is a lake located in the municipality of Aurland in Vestland county, Norway. It lies on the Hardangervidda plateau, close to the border with Hol municipality. The lake is situated at an elevation of 1,298 meters (4,259 ft) above sea level.

Taugevatn is notable for its connection to the Bergen Line railway. The railway runs along the northern shore of the lake. The lake also played a significant role in the infamous "Taugevatn Accident" of 1918, an avalanche that derailed a train and resulted in multiple fatalities.

The area surrounding Taugevatn is characterized by its harsh, alpine climate and sparse vegetation. The lake itself is typically frozen for a significant portion of the year. Due to its remote location and the challenging conditions, the area remains relatively undisturbed and is a popular destination for hiking and cross-country skiing. The lake contributes to the water resources of the region, eventually draining into surrounding river systems.
