Dârjiu

Dârjiu is a commune located in Harghita County, Transylvania, Romania. It is known primarily for its fortified Unitarian church, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania.

The fortified church, originally built in the 13th century and fortified in the 16th century, is a significant example of Transylvanian Saxon architectural heritage. Its thick walls, defensive towers, and inner courtyard provided protection for the villagers during times of conflict. The church's interior features well-preserved frescoes and traditional furnishings, offering insight into the religious and cultural life of the community.

Dârjiu, the village itself, is a relatively small settlement dependent on agriculture and tourism. The inscription of the fortified church on the UNESCO World Heritage List has helped to attract visitors and support the local economy. The commune also encompasses the villages of Mujna and Valea Rotundă. The population is primarily Hungarian-speaking Szekelys.
