Montlouis

Montlouis is an appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for white wines in the Loire Valley region of France. It is situated directly across the Loire River from the more famous Vouvray AOC. Montlouis wines are made exclusively from the Chenin Blanc grape, locally known as "Pineau de la Loire."

The wines of Montlouis are known for their versatility, ranging from dry (sec) to off-dry (demi-sec) and sweet (moelleux), as well as sparkling (pétillant and mousseux). The terroir of Montlouis, characterized by its flinty clay soils, contributes to the wine's distinctive minerality and acidity.

Montlouis producers often employ traditional winemaking techniques, including fermentation in oak barrels. The wines can age well, developing complex honeyed and nutty flavors over time.

The Montlouis AOC was officially recognized in 1938. While it is often overshadowed by its more well-known neighbor Vouvray, Montlouis offers excellent value and a diverse range of Chenin Blanc expressions.
