Slocum House (Vancouver, Washington)

The Slocum House is a historic house located in Esther Short Park in Vancouver, Washington. Built in 1867, it is one of the oldest surviving residences in the city. The house was originally built for Captain William Henry Slocum, a steamboat captain and prominent businessman in the early days of Vancouver.

The Slocum House is a two-story wood-frame structure built in the Carpenter Gothic style. It is characterized by its steeply pitched gables, elaborate bargeboards, and pointed-arch windows. The exterior is clad in clapboard siding. The house features a front porch with decorative posts and railings.

The house remained in the Slocum family until 1966. In the 1980s, it was moved from its original location to Esther Short Park to save it from demolition. The Slocum House is currently operated as a museum and event venue by the Clark County Historical Museum. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house offers insights into the life of a prominent family in 19th-century Vancouver and provides an example of Carpenter Gothic architecture.
