George Pirie (mathematician)
George Pirie (1843 – 1904) was a Scottish mathematician and academic. He is primarily known for his contributions to geometry, particularly in the field of higher plane curves.
Pirie was educated at the University of Aberdeen, graduating with an MA in 1864. After further study in Germany, he returned to Aberdeen and became a lecturer in mathematics. He later served as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Aberdeen from 1878 until his death.
His work included research on the properties and classification of algebraic curves. Pirie also published textbooks on algebra and geometry, intended for use by students. These works helped to popularize mathematical concepts and make them accessible to a wider audience.
Pirie was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was also involved in various educational and administrative roles at the University of Aberdeen, contributing to the development of the institution and the advancement of mathematical education in Scotland.
