Major (United States)
In the United States Armed Forces, Major is a field grade officer rank, ranking above Captain and below Lieutenant Colonel. It is equivalent to the rank of O-4 in the uniformed services pay grades.
Responsibilities and Authority
Majors typically serve as staff officers at battalion and brigade levels. They may also command companies, particularly in specialized units or support roles. Their responsibilities often include planning, coordinating, and supervising operations, as well as advising senior officers on tactical and logistical matters.
Insignia
The insignia of a Major in the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps is a gold oak leaf. In the Space Force, the insignia is a gold oak leaf, identical to the other branches.
Career Progression
Promotion to Major is competitive and based on factors such as performance, time in grade, education, and availability of positions. Officers typically serve as Captains for several years before being considered for promotion.
