NGC 4222

NGC 4222 is a spiral galaxy located approximately 62 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. It is a member of the Virgo Cluster, a large cluster of galaxies.

NGC 4222 is characterized as an anemic spiral galaxy, meaning it has a relatively low star formation rate compared to other spiral galaxies of similar size and morphology. This reduced star formation is thought to be due to the galaxy's interaction with the hot intracluster medium of the Virgo Cluster, which can strip away gas and dust, the raw materials needed for star birth.

The galaxy was discovered on April 8, 1784, by William Herschel. Its apparent magnitude is approximately 12, making it visible through a telescope, but it appears faint due to its distance. Its diameter is estimated to be around 50,000 light-years.

Observations of NGC 4222 have contributed to a better understanding of galaxy evolution in cluster environments and the effects of ram-pressure stripping on star formation.
