Middlesex (Province of Canada electoral district)

Middlesex was a historical electoral district in the Province of Canada, also known as the United Province of Canada. It existed from 1841 to 1867, encompassing the geographic county of Middlesex in what is now southwestern Ontario. The district was located in Canada West (formerly Upper Canada).

The electoral district of Middlesex was created as part of the Act of Union 1840, which united Upper and Lower Canada into a single political entity. Its purpose was to elect a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to represent the interests of the residents of Middlesex County in the provincial parliament.

Throughout its existence, Middlesex underwent boundary adjustments to reflect population changes and administrative reorganizations within the county. These changes are reflected in the election results and represented areas over the period.

Notable individuals who represented Middlesex in the Legislative Assembly include prominent political figures of the time who played a role in shaping the political landscape of the Province of Canada leading up to Confederation.

With the passage of the British North America Act in 1867, the Province of Canada was dissolved, and its territory was divided into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The electoral district of Middlesex was subsequently divided into separate electoral districts within the newly formed province of Ontario. These included Middlesex East, Middlesex West, and Middlesex North. These divisions reflected the need for more localized representation within the new provincial structure.
