USS La Salle (AP-102)

The USS La Salle (AP-102) was a transport ship that served with the United States Navy during World War II. She was originally built as a Type C3-P&C cargo ship under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 163) named Delorleans for the Mississippi Shipping Company’s Delta Line. The Navy acquired her on 17 January 1943, renamed her La Salle on 25 January 1943, and commissioned her on 16 February 1943, with Captain Frank T. Dodge in command.

La Salle participated in several major amphibious operations in the Pacific Theater, including the landings at Guadalcanal, the Russell Islands, and the Philippines. She transported troops, equipment, and supplies to support these operations.

Following World War II, La Salle was used for Operation Magic Carpet, bringing American servicemen home from overseas. She was decommissioned in 1946 and returned to the Maritime Commission. She was subsequently sold back to the Mississippi Shipping Company and resumed her commercial service under the name Delorleans.
