Dukan Dam

The Dukan Dam is a multi-purpose arch dam located on the Lesser Zab River in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Construction began in 1954 and was completed in 1959. The dam's primary purposes are irrigation, flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and providing a water supply.

The dam is 360 meters long and 116.5 meters high. It creates Lake Dukan, which is a large reservoir with a storage capacity of approximately 7 billion cubic meters. The dam's hydroelectric power station has a capacity of 400 megawatts. The Dukan Dam plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of the Lesser Zab River, benefiting downstream agriculture and communities. Due to its strategic importance, the dam has been the subject of concern and security measures during periods of conflict in the region. The dam's operational management is critical for maintaining water resources and power generation in the area.
