Mob (video games)

In video games, particularly those of the role-playing (RPG), massively multiplayer online (MMO), and action genres, the term "mob" (short for "mobile object" or "monster object") refers to a non-player character (NPC) that is typically hostile to the player and other players. Mobs are often encountered in groups and are a primary source of combat and challenges within the game.

Mobs differ from other NPCs in their primary function: they are generally designed to be defeated in combat, providing experience points, loot, and progress for the player. While some NPCs may offer quests or dialogue, mobs typically exist solely as enemies.

The behavior of mobs can vary widely depending on the game and the specific mob type. Some mobs might exhibit simple, predictable patterns, such as patrolling a specific area or attacking any player that comes within range. Others may possess more complex AI, including the ability to use special abilities, coordinate attacks, or react to environmental changes.

Mobs are often categorized by their difficulty level, which is usually represented by their level, health, attack power, and defense. More difficult mobs offer greater rewards but also pose a greater threat to the player. Common difficulty classifications include standard mobs, elite mobs (tougher versions of standard mobs), and boss mobs (powerful, unique enemies that often guard key locations or resources).

The term "mob" can also encompass creatures that aren't necessarily hostile, but are still considered game objects and subject to similar technical treatment. This usage is less common, and typically refers to passive wildlife or environmental entities within a game world.
