Cheryl White (jockey)

Cheryl White (1953-2019) was an American jockey who broke barriers as one of the first African-American female professional jockeys in the historically male-dominated sport of horse racing. White began riding horses at a young age and received her jockey's license in 1971. She faced significant discrimination and prejudice throughout her career due to her race and gender. Despite these obstacles, White persevered, riding over 750 winners during her career. After retiring from racing, she remained involved with horses, training and teaching others. Her contributions paved the way for future generations of female and minority jockeys, and she is remembered as a trailblazer in the sport.
