Han Huang

Han Huang (韓滉, 723 – 787), courtesy name Taichong (太沖), was a Chinese painter, calligrapher, and politician of the Tang Dynasty. He served as a high-ranking official during the reign of Emperor Dezong, eventually holding the position of Chancellor.

Born in Chang'an (present-day Xi'an), Han Huang came from a prominent family and excelled in his studies, passing the imperial examinations. He rose through the ranks of the imperial bureaucracy, demonstrating talent in administration and a strong sense of loyalty. His career spanned several decades, marked by periods of both political stability and upheaval.

As a painter, Han Huang is best known for his depictions of rural life, particularly his paintings of oxen. His style is characterized by meticulous detail and a realistic portrayal of the animals and their environment. Only a few works are definitively attributed to him, with Five Oxen being the most famous. These paintings are valuable historical records, offering insights into agricultural practices and the visual culture of the Tang Dynasty.

Beyond his artistic and political achievements, Han Huang was also known for his calligraphy, considered to be in a refined and elegant style. His calligraphy complemented his paintings and reflected his cultured background.
