Muddy River (Nevada)

The Muddy River is a short river located in Clark County, Nevada, in the United States. It is approximately 32 miles (51 km) long.

The river is formed by the confluence of several springs near the town of Moapa, located in the Moapa Valley. These springs, fed by the Muddy River Regional Groundwater Flow System, provide a relatively constant flow of water to the river, even in the arid desert environment.

The Muddy River flows generally southward through the Moapa Valley, passing by the towns of Glendale and Logandale. It eventually empties into the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, a reservoir on the Colorado River formed by Hoover Dam. Prior to the dam's construction, the Muddy River flowed into the Virgin River.

The river is important for local agriculture and recreation. Its waters are used for irrigation in the Moapa Valley, supporting farming of crops such as alfalfa and melons. Recreational activities include fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. The area surrounding the Muddy River is home to a variety of desert flora and fauna, including the endangered Moapa dace, a small fish found only in the Muddy River system.

The Muddy River has been subject to various environmental concerns, including water quality issues related to agricultural runoff and invasive species. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the river's ecosystem and ensure its long-term sustainability.
