Mind map

A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information. It is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank landscape page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those.

Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing. They can be created by hand, either as "rough" notes during a lecture or meeting, or as higher quality pictures. There are also numerous software packages available for this.

The key elements of a mind map are:

  • Central Idea: A central image or word that represents the main topic.
  • Branches: Radiating branches that connect the main idea to related subtopics.
  • Keywords/Images: Brief keywords or representative images used to label each branch and sub-branch.
  • Color/Symbols: The use of color and symbols to highlight connections and themes, and to aid memory.
  • Hierarchy: A hierarchical structure reflecting the relative importance of different ideas.

Mind maps are often contrasted with linear note-taking methods, as they are considered to be more visually engaging and promote a more holistic and interconnected understanding of the subject matter. They are particularly useful for brainstorming, planning projects, and summarizing information.
