11th (Northern) Division

The 11th (Northern) Division was an infantry division of the British Army, initially formed in 1914 as part of Kitchener's New Armies during the First World War. It was raised from volunteers and saw active service on the Gallipoli Peninsula and on the Western Front.

Formation and Early Service:

The division was part of the Dardanelles Army and landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, in August 1915. It participated in the August Offensive, including the Battle of Scimitar Hill. The 11th Division suffered heavy casualties during the Gallipoli Campaign and was evacuated in December 1915.

Western Front:

After a period of reorganisation and reinforcement, the 11th Division was transferred to the Western Front in July 1916. It participated in several major battles, including the Battle of the Somme, the Battle of Arras, and the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). Throughout its time on the Western Front, the division endured the harsh conditions of trench warfare and played a part in the Allied offensives against German forces.

Disbandment:

The 11th (Northern) Division was disbanded after the end of the First World War.
