Samar Sen (diplomat)

Samar Sen (1914-2003) was an Indian diplomat and civil servant. He served as India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations during a critical period in international relations, from 1969 to 1974.

Sen was a member of the Indian Civil Service (ICS), a highly selective group of administrators who played a key role in governing British India and, later, independent India. Prior to his UN assignment, he held various positions within the Indian government, including postings in Geneva, as well as serving as India's High Commissioner to Australia (1965-1968) and Ambassador to Algeria (1968-1969).

As Permanent Representative to the UN, Sen represented India during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War and the creation of Bangladesh. His skillful diplomacy was crucial in advocating for India's position and navigating the complex international response to the conflict. He played a significant role in UN debates surrounding the issue and helped to shape international understanding of the humanitarian crisis and the political realities leading to the war. He was known for his eloquence, intellectual rigor, and nuanced approach to international diplomacy.

After his retirement from the Indian Foreign Service, Sen remained involved in public life, writing and speaking on international affairs. He is remembered as one of India's most respected and effective diplomats.
