48th Army (Soviet Union)

The 48th Army was a field army of the Soviet Union's Red Army during World War II and the postwar period. Formed in August 1941 as part of the Northern Front, it participated in the defense of the Soviet Union against the German invasion, Operation Barbarossa.

Initially, the 48th Army defended the approaches to Leningrad as part of the Luga Operational Group. It was involved in heavy fighting during the Siege of Leningrad. Throughout the war, the army was primarily engaged on the northern and central sectors of the Eastern Front.

The 48th Army participated in several major offensives, including Operation Bagration in 1944, playing a significant role in the liberation of Belarus. It also fought in East Prussia during the East Prussian Offensive in 1945. The army's contributions were crucial to the overall Soviet war effort in these areas.

Following the end of World War II, the 48th Army remained in Eastern Europe as part of the occupation forces. It was later disbanded.

Commanders of the 48th Army included prominent Soviet generals. Specific details regarding the army's composition, size, and specific battles fought vary depending on the source, but its overall contribution to the Soviet war effort on the Eastern Front is well-documented.
