Philippe Thys (cyclist)
Philippe Thys (8 October 1890 – 16 January 1971) was a Belgian cyclist, notable for winning the Tour de France three times: 1913, 1914, and 1920. He was the first cyclist to win the Tour de France three times, a record he held for many years.
Thys was a versatile cyclist, excelling in both time trials and mountain stages. His early career was interrupted by World War I, during which he served in the Belgian army. After the war, he returned to cycling and achieved his third Tour de France victory in 1920.
His Tour de France victories were characterized by strong performances across diverse terrain and an ability to withstand the grueling conditions of the race at the time. He faced stiff competition from riders such as Henri Pélissier.
Beyond the Tour de France, Thys also achieved success in other races, including Belgian national championships and various classics. He is considered one of the pioneers of professional cycling and a significant figure in the history of the Tour de France.
