Miravet

Miravet is a municipality in the comarca of Ribera d'Ebre, province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on a prominent hill overlooking the Ebro River.

History:

The strategic location of Miravet has made it a historically significant settlement. Its most notable feature is the Castell de Miravet, a Templar castle, which dominates the landscape. The castle was originally a Moorish fortress before being captured by Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, in 1153. It was then granted to the Knights Templar, who transformed it into a powerful commandery and fortress. After the suppression of the Templars in the early 14th century, the castle passed to the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers). The castle played a role in various conflicts throughout history, including the Reapers' War (1640-1652) and the Carlist Wars.
