The Empire Strikes Back (soundtrack)
The Empire Strikes Back (soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 1980 science fiction film Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, composed and conducted by John Williams. Released by RSO Records, it features musical cues written for the film, excluding some source music. The original release consisted of two LP records.
The score is a continuation of themes introduced in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, incorporating new themes such as "The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)," which became one of the most recognizable and iconic pieces of film music in history. Other notable themes include "Yoda's Theme" and "Han Solo and the Princess."
The soundtrack was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. It was a commercial success, reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. Several re-releases and expanded editions have been issued over the years, offering listeners more complete versions of the film's score. These later releases often include previously unreleased cues and remastered audio.
