Kalpana (Kannada actress)

Kalpana (1943 – 1979) was a prominent Indian actress who primarily worked in Kannada cinema during the 1960s and 1970s. She is considered one of the most successful and influential actresses in the history of Kannada cinema.

Born as Sharat Lata in Udupi, Karnataka, she adopted the screen name Kalpana. She made her acting debut in the Kannada film Saaku Magalu in 1963.

Kalpana was known for her versatile acting skills and ability to portray a wide range of characters, from glamorous heroines to emotionally complex roles. Some of her most notable films include Bellimoda (1967), Eradu Kanasu (1974), Bayalu Dari (1976), and Bangarada Hoovu (1967). She received numerous awards for her performances, including the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actress multiple times.

Beyond acting, Kalpana also ventured into film production and direction.

Tragically, Kalpana's life was cut short when she died by suicide in 1979. Her untimely death shocked the Kannada film industry and her fans. Despite her short career, she left behind a significant legacy and continues to be remembered as one of the most talented and beloved actresses in Kannada cinema.
